Development Cup Information Announced

QuidditchUK are now able to release the player and team registration information for Development Cup happening on the 2nd and 3rd of March 2019, at Salford Sports Village in Manchester.

Player Eligibility

Only certain players are eligible to compete at Development Cup. Please ensure you are familiar with our policies, as they will affect both your right to compete AND your eligibility to play for British Quidditch Cup qualification.

Team Rosters and Registration

Clubs must register their intention to compete by emailing events@quidditchuk.org – providing the names and number of teams they wish to send to Development Cup. We do not need rosters or registered players at this stage.

Clubs must register their intention to compete by Saturday, 9/02/19 at 21:00

Clubs will be emailed specific registration forms, complete with up to date information on player tournament AND membership registration.

Teams must complete these forms and submit final rosters by Saturday, 16/02/19 at 21:00

The team fee is £40.00 per team.

This fee will be charged to your club upon expiration of the Team Roster Deadline.

Player & Volunteer Registration

The player fee is £20.00 per player.

This fee will be charged to your club upon expiration of the registration deadline.

This form consists of your player and volunteer sign-up for both certified and non-certified volunteers. It also includes sections for tournament waivers, medical information, and the misconduct policy. The form concludes with an optional medical survey that is a continuation of the injury studies carried out across our QuidditchUK tournaments.

Development Cup 2019 Location Announced

QuidditchUK are pleased to announce that Development Cup 2019 will be hosted at Salford Sports Village, in Manchester 2nd – 3rd March 2019. 

Salford Sports Centre is a sporting facility in Manchester complete with full athletic facilities. Development Cup will see use of both grass 3G pitches, changing rooms, floodlit grounds and indoor access for our athletes. Salford Community Sport is excited to work with QuidditchUK, and we’re looking forward to seeing our teams come together and compete.

Given the growth of QuidditchUK and our development level teams, it’s important that Development Cup 2019 reflects that growth with a high end sports ground.

As teams will be competing for British Quidditch Cup spots, it’s important that your club leadership make themselves familiar with the team and player policies surrounding eligibility for Development Cup 2019.

QuidditchUK would like to apologise for the significant delay in the announcement of this tournament – A previously organised venue in Wolverhampton was cancelled at the last minute by the venue. The cancellation happened immediately before the final written agreement had been set between the two parties.

Despite attempts, the timing of the cancellation prevented us from confirming another venue in a timely matter due to the holiday break. This coupled with the attention required of the upcoming European Qualifier Tournament resulted in the further delays to getting this out.

Nevertheless we are confident that Salford Sports Centre will be an excellent venue for Development Cup and future QuidditchUK events.

Due to the delay, QuidditchUK will endeavour to provide some leniency in team and roster deadlines in the lead up to Development Cup.

2018/2019 Season Structure Amendments

At the beginning of the 2018/19 season it was announced that the European Qualifier Tournament (EQT) and British Quidditch Cup (BQC) would use a Swiss system on day 1, followed by bracket play on day 2. Additionally, it was announced that BQC would be seeded using an algorithm with results from QuidditchUK Events and Accredited Events feeding into the rankings.

Following a post-regionals review, EQT will now use a 3-pool 4-team round robin structure on Day 1, with a seeded bracket on Day 2 including playoffs for D1 and D2 EQC spots. BQC will use an 8-pool 4-team round robin structure on Day 1, with a standard seeded single-elimination bracket.

EQT pool seeding will use the rankings determined via playoffs at regionals. BQC seeding for the 12 teams attending EQT will be determined by the final rankings of that tournament. The remaining seeding for BQC will be determined by final ranking at regionals.

Reasons for the change

In the interests of transparency, QuidditchUK would like to take this opportunity to explain the reasonings behind these changes.

A Swiss system requires pairings between teams to be drawn after each full round of games based on their record in the tournament so far. This means that only the first round of matches can be determined (for both teams and match officials) in advance of the tournament and that all other scheduling must be done live.

Based on feedback from the regionals organising committee, QuidditchUK believes that  it is not feasible to complete team and match official scheduling to an appropriate standard within the time constraints of the tournament schedule. Additionally, without a sophisticated notification system (such as the SMS-based technology used by USQ), the difficulty of informing all match officials and teams of their allocations is likely to prove insurmountable.

By contrast to the Swiss system, pool play allows for all matches and match officials for Day 1 to be scheduled ahead of the event, providing the maximum notice of volunteering and playing slots for both officials and teams. Criticism of the pool-and-bracket system in previous years has centred largely around unbalanced seeding due to the use of regionals results, which will be mitigated by the use of EQT results to seed the top 12 teams.

Tournament committees

These conservative predictions of event management capacity are based on the unprecedentedly low number of tournament committee applicants for regionals 2018. In total, only 3 volunteers were recruited across both regionals who did not already volunteer for QuidditchUK in some capacity.

The role of the tournament committee is often paramount to ensuring the successful delivery of a tournament and, although the efforts of volunteers who did not initially sign up to participate in tournament has not gone unnoticed, it meant that in some cases, existing QuidditchUK staff were diverted away from their usual roles.

Accredited Events

To adapt to increased demand for the support of existing QuidditchUK volunteers during Regionals 2018, the development of the Accredited Events system has been temporarily put on hold.

This decision was not made lightly and results from the belief that introducing Accredited Events at such short notice before BQC and expect teams to arrange high-quality events to guarantee their seeding would be both unfair and unfeasible.

However, it is important to note that QuidditchUK are dedicated to ensuring that this system is realised ready for the 2019/2020 season as feedback from teams was largely positive about the proposed idea.

By revising the launch date, the quality of the programme and integrity of BQC 2019 seeding can take priority to ensure that all interested parties benefit as much as possible.

European Qualifier Tournament Structure

The European Qualifier Tournament (EQT) will use a 3-group, 4-team round robin structure on Day 1, followed by a seeded bracket on Day 2 of the tournament, with playoffs to determine EQC D1 and D2 qualification.

Day 1 – Groups

The groups are determined using a ranked, alternating-region snake draw. In order to split teams into pools the 12 EQT qualifying teams from regionals were ranked based on the standard QuidditchUK final tournament ranking criteria (i.e. tournament rank, QPD, etc.)

The first seed teams were allocated to groups in the order A to C, selecting by overall rank.

The second seeds were then drawn into groups in the order C to A, selecting the highest-ranked team available from the opposite region to the first seed.

The third seeds were drawn in the order A to C, selecting the highest-ranked team available from the same region as the first seed.

Finally, the fourth seeds were drawn in the order C to A, selecting the highest-ranked team available from the opposite region to the first seed, and where this became impossible, selecting by overall rank.

This method of drawing groups was selected to ensure fair seeding based on performance at regionals while creating as few rematches from regionals as possible. A total of three matches on Day 1 of EQT are repeated from regionals, while groups seeded by overall ranking without alternating regions would have resulted in seven rematches on Day 1.

Day 2 – Bracket

After Day 1, teams will be ranked using the usual QuidditchUK tournament ranking procedures. These rankings will be used to seed the bracket below. There is no policy in place to prevent replays of games from Day 1, as this would effectively involve adjusting teams’ rankings which may unfairly advantage or disadvantage teams.

Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 2 games on Day 2 of the tournament.

Semi-finalists automatically qualify for EQC Division 1, and will continue to play off for medals and EQC seeding.

Teams losing either their play-in game or quarter-final will enter into a playoff bracket for EQC qualification.

Losers of the first round of this bracket are eliminated from the tournament, and do not qualify for EQC.

Winners of the second round of this bracket qualify for EQC Division 1 and losers qualify for EQC Division 2.

Due to venue time constraints, no further playoffs will be held to determine EQC seeding for teams ranked 5/6 and 7/8 – these will be determined via the standard final tournament ranking criteria.

Given that EQT takes place one week following the transfer window deadline, members wishing to transfer into teams competing at EQT must submit their request by 9pm January 9th 2019 so QuidditchUK can verify rosters and eligibility. Members who do not meet this transfer deadline will not be eligible to compete at the European Qualifier Tournament.

QuidditchUK will only allow extensions in significant extenuating circumstances.

A QuidditchUK statement regarding Match Fixing at Northern Cup 2018

QuidditchUK have concluded their investigations of the match fixing allegations that arose from Northern Cup 2018.

The allegations were overseen and investigated by:

These members were chosen as they have no current or prior affiliation with the involved clubs,  nor were they involved with either incident as a player or volunteer.

Upon completion of initial investigations the final report was independently verified by Joshua Fogg (Operations Director) to ensure investigations had been completed fairly and thoroughly.

Our investigations were completed following the disciplinary process outlined in the QuidditchUK Club and Team Membership Policy

Velociraptors vs Sheffield Quidditch Club

QuidditchUK received multiple complaints regarding the quarter-final match between Sheffield and Velociraptors, these were:

  1. Sheffield Squids fixed the match to give themselves an easier run to a European Qualifier Tournament spot.
  2. Sheffield Squids were disrespectful towards their opponents.
  3. Sheffield Squids showed a lack of sportsmanship at an upper bracket quarter-final match.
  4. Velociraptor players made violent physical threats towards Sheffield Squid players.
  5. Velociraptor players were intentionally playing to harm Sheffield Squids players.
  6. Velociraptors were a dangerous and unsafe team to compete against.

After taking statements from all involved parties, QuidditchUK has determined the the following.

  1. Sheffield Squids were complicit in match fixing, through lack of any reasonable attempt to attack or defend throughout the entire game. This complaint has been upheld.
  2. Sheffield Squids’ attitude and behaviour throughout the match was disrespectful towards their opponents in their lack of willingness towards to take the game seriously. This complaint has been upheld.
  3. Sheffield Squids’ attitude towards the match was poor, and threatened to bring disrepute to QuidditchUK as an organisation  and quidditch as a sport. Given this was a local tournament for Sheffield, having Sheffield based spectators watch this faux-competition could only serve to negatively impact the perception of both quidditch and Sheffield Quidditch Club. This complaint has been upheld.
  4. After taking statements from the entire referee team, the context in which the alleged threat was made deemed it to instead be a direct warning from the player and not a violent threat. The Velociraptor player had a free run towards the Sheffield hoops, and the defending Sheffield player was directly blocking the hoops. Should the Velociraptors player have chosen to, they could have legally (under the current IQA Rulebook 2018-2020 rules) charged through the defending Sheffield player. The Velociraptor player instead told the player to get out of the way. This complaint has been cleared.
  5. Velociraptor players were not playing illegally or dangerously, and their level of physicality was consistent with how they had been competing throughout the tournament against other opponents. Furthermore their contact was inline with how other teams had been playing throughout Northern. This complaint has been cleared.
  6. Velociraptor players did not cause a higher number of injuries through regular play at Northern Cup 2018, and QuidditchUK disagrees that they are a dangerous team to play against. This complaint has been cleared.

QuidditchUK acknowledges that Sheffield Squids were conserving themselves for further fixtures, however the approach the team took showed a severe lack of sportsmanship, and called into question the validity of the sport in front of a crowd of spectators, including those from Sheffield itself, who were expecting a competitive quarterfinal.

Through our investigation, QuidditchUK has determined the following penalties be applied to Sheffield Quidditch Club, deeming their behaviour falls under the following in the Club and Team Membership Policy:

Displaying attitude or conduct on a quidditch pitch or in a quidditch environment which brings or threatens to bring QuidditchUK into disrepute by association of membership.

Sheffield Squids will be permitted to compete at the British Quidditch Cup 2019, however they will enter the competition as an unseeded team.

No further penalties shall be applied to the Sheffield Squids leadership staff.

No penalty shall be applied to the Sheffield Steelfins.

Both Velociraptors QC and Sheffield Quidditch Club were given until 4/12/18 to appeal the decisions made by QuidditchUK, no appeal was made by either club.

QuidditchUK has now released the final rankings for Northern Cup 2018As Sheffield has lost their second seed status, Leeds Griffins will enter the British Quidditch Cup as a second seed team.

As the QuidditchUK Team Match-Fixing Policy was implemented following Northern Cup 2018, we have not punished Sheffield Quidditch Club retroactively via this policy. However any further instances of Match-Fixing by any QuidditchUK club or team will be met with the policy in full. This matter is now considered resolved by QuidditchUK. For any questions or queries, please get in touch via quidditchuk.org/contact

Werewolves of London and Velociraptors QC Claim Regional Titles

QuidditchUK would like to congratulate Velociraptors Quidditch Club and Werewolves of London Firsts for winning the 2018 Northern and Southern Cups respectively. Velociraptors QC eased to their third Northern Cup title in a row, and in the south the Werewolves of London claimed their first ever QuidditchUK tournament title after two consecutive years of silver medal finishes in the 2016 and 2017 Southern Cup.

Both teams will advance to the European Qualifying Tournament in January, along with the other top five finishers from the north and top seven from the south. Taking place in London, the tournament will decide who gets to represent the UK on the European stage at EQC Divisions 1 and 2 this season.

QuidditchUK Operations Department Volunteering Opportunities

We recently talked to Josh Fogg, Operations Department Director, about what inspired their passion for volunteering for QuidditchUK and their hopes for the future of the Operations Department.

Looking after QuidditchUK’s finances, purchasing equipment and merchandise, and liaising with other departments are just a few of the tasks that the Operations Department undertakes. As the department looks to the future, the team are looking for three new volunteers to help them with the varied daily running of QUK; a great chance for anyone who wants to be more involved in the quidditch family. Josh gives more information on these roles for anyone that may be interested.

What is your background as a quidditch player?

I started playing for Manchester Manticores in January 2016 and instantly fell in love with the sport. Like a lot of quidditch players it was my first real experience being involved with a team sport, but I felt at home in the inclusive environment that comes with quidditch. I knew from fairly early on that I wanted to be more involved, so I served as Games Coordinator for the club in 2016/17 and then President in 2017/18. Both were great experiences. It was a pleasure working with a lovely committee and to see the club grow so significantly both in size and in talent.

What were you motivations to become a volunteer with QUK?

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that the QUK Operations Department doesn’t have a great reputation. Holding QUK to account over financial reporting was something I cared about a great deal as MUQC President, and I know it’s something many other clubs care about too. Towards the end of my time on Manchester’s committee, I decided that it was time to be the change I wanted to see. I volunteered to work within the Operations Department on more transparent financial reporting, or at least to do the day-to-day work, so that it could be more of a focus for others. The start of this process was hopefully seen in the BQC 2018 financial report and the 2017/18 season financial report, and we aim to keep building on it into the 2018/19 season and beyond.

What are your hopes for the department?

While transparency is definitely a key goal for me, there are other things I’d like the department to help QUK achieve over the coming year. More careful financial planning will hopefully allow us to set aside money in the long term for developing the sport in parts of the country where it’s currently underrepresented, as well as fulfilling popular requests such as high quality livestreams and match recordings without it coming at an extra cost to players. We’re also actively working towards incorporating in the near future so that we have a concrete legal standing going forward.

What positions are currently open in the Operations Department?

There are currently three positions which the department is recruiting for. The first is an Assistant Operations Director, who would play a key role in liaising with the Events Department and aiding myself with the responsibilities of the Operations Department. Ideally we’re looking for someone with a background in equipment and/or merchandise; those aren’t a strength of mine and are areas where QUK needs expertise to make sure we’re doing things right.

We’re also recruiting Financial & Operations Assistants. These roles help with the day-to-day business of the department. The duties include financial reimbursements, as you might expect, but also helping to create budgets for events, writing reports and aiding in the incorporation process. Experience as a treasurer or quidditch organiser is useful, but not necessary!

QuidditchUK appoints new Outreach Director

QuidditchUK are excited to announce Kevin Li will be joining the Executive Management Team as the new Outreach Director.

Kevin has been playing quidditch for just over a year, and is already a key committee member of London Unspeakables. No stranger to sporting committees, Kevin was previously the Captain for his fencing club, a role that saw huge growth and success as a result of his years there. We’ve no doubt that experience will translate directly into quidditch, and we look forward to what Kevin brings as we continue to bring our sport to the world.

Kevin will be helming the department previously held by Rix Dishington, and run by Beth Thompson as acting Outreach Director for the last few months.

As Outreach Director Kevin will be focusing on the growth of sport in communities outside of the normal quidditch ecosystem. Opportunities are already presenting themselves for growth, especially in the youth system with our partners, Enrich Education, seeing massive success with quidditch amongst school children.

A huge thanks to Kevin for taking on this role, we’re excited to see where he takes it.
