Werewolves of London and Velociraptors QC Claim Regional Titles

QuidditchUK would like to congratulate Velociraptors Quidditch Club and Werewolves of London Firsts for winning the 2018 Northern and Southern Cups respectively. Velociraptors QC eased to their third Northern Cup title in a row, and in the south the Werewolves of London claimed their first ever QuidditchUK tournament title after two consecutive years of silver medal finishes in the 2016 and 2017 Southern Cup.

Both teams will advance to the European Qualifying Tournament in January, along with the other top five finishers from the north and top seven from the south. Taking place in London, the tournament will decide who gets to represent the UK on the European stage at EQC Divisions 1 and 2 this season.

EDIT 10/12/18:
The full Northern results and rankings are now released upon completion of the investigation into the match fixing at Northern Cup 2018. Sheffield Squids will be permitted to compete at the British Quidditch Cup 2019, however they will enter the competition as an unseeded team and Leeds Griffins will enter as a second seed team.

QuidditchUK Operations Department Volunteering Opportunities

We recently talked to Josh Fogg, Operations Department Director, about what inspired their passion for volunteering for QuidditchUK and their hopes for the future of the Operations Department.

Looking after QuidditchUK’s finances, purchasing equipment and merchandise, and liaising with other departments are just a few of the tasks that the Operations Department undertakes. As the department looks to the future, the team are looking for three new volunteers to help them with the varied daily running of QUK; a great chance for anyone who wants to be more involved in the quidditch family. Josh gives more information on these roles for anyone that may be interested.

What is your background as a quidditch player?

I started playing for Manchester Manticores in January 2016 and instantly fell in love with the sport. Like a lot of quidditch players it was my first real experience being involved with a team sport, but I felt at home in the inclusive environment that comes with quidditch. I knew from fairly early on that I wanted to be more involved, so I served as Games Coordinator for the club in 2016/17 and then President in 2017/18. Both were great experiences. It was a pleasure working with a lovely committee and to see the club grow so significantly both in size and in talent.

What were you motivations to become a volunteer with QUK?

I’ll be the first to acknowledge that the QUK Operations Department doesn’t have a great reputation. Holding QUK to account over financial reporting was something I cared about a great deal as MUQC President, and I know it’s something many other clubs care about too. Towards the end of my time on Manchester’s committee, I decided that it was time to be the change I wanted to see. I volunteered to work within the Operations Department on more transparent financial reporting, or at least to do the day-to-day work, so that it could be more of a focus for others. The start of this process was hopefully seen in the BQC 2018 financial report and the 2017/18 season financial report, and we aim to keep building on it into the 2018/19 season and beyond.

What are your hopes for the department?

While transparency is definitely a key goal for me, there are other things I’d like the department to help QUK achieve over the coming year. More careful financial planning will hopefully allow us to set aside money in the long term for developing the sport in parts of the country where it’s currently underrepresented, as well as fulfilling popular requests such as high quality livestreams and match recordings without it coming at an extra cost to players. We’re also actively working towards incorporating in the near future so that we have a concrete legal standing going forward.

What positions are currently open in the Operations Department?

There are currently three positions which the department is recruiting for. The first is an Assistant Operations Director, who would play a key role in liaising with the Events Department and aiding myself with the responsibilities of the Operations Department. Ideally we’re looking for someone with a background in equipment and/or merchandise; those aren’t a strength of mine and are areas where QUK needs expertise to make sure we’re doing things right.

We’re also recruiting Financial & Operations Assistants. These roles help with the day-to-day business of the department. The duties include financial reimbursements, as you might expect, but also helping to create budgets for events, writing reports and aiding in the incorporation process. Experience as a treasurer or quidditch organiser is useful, but not necessary!

QuidditchUK appoints new Outreach Director

QuidditchUK are excited to announce Kevin Li will be joining the Executive Management Team as the new Outreach Director.

Kevin has been playing quidditch for just over a year, and is already a key committee member of London Unspeakables. No stranger to sporting committees, Kevin was previously the Captain for his fencing club, a role that saw huge growth and success as a result of his years there. We’ve no doubt that experience will translate directly into quidditch, and we look forward to what Kevin brings as we continue to bring our sport to the world.

Kevin will be helming the department previously held by Rix Dishington, and run by Beth Thompson as acting Outreach Director for the last few months.

As Outreach Director Kevin will be focusing on the growth of sport in communities outside of the normal quidditch ecosystem. Opportunities are already presenting themselves for growth, especially in the youth system with our partners, Enrich Education, seeing massive success with quidditch amongst school children.

A huge thanks to Kevin for taking on this role, we’re excited to see where he takes it.

A QuidditchUK statement regarding Northern Cup 2018

QuidditchUK would like to address the allegations of Match Fixing at Northern Cup 2018, held over the 10th and 11th November.

QuidditchUK are taking these allegations seriously, and will not stand for unfair manipulation of any quidditch match or tournament outcome. Any instance of match fixing is not in line with the values of QuidditchUK, and does a disservice to our sport and our athletes at all levels of the game.

All teams impacted by or allegedly involved in Match Fixing at Northern Cup 2018 will be investigated by the Executive Management Team and disciplined as necessary according to the Event Discipline and Suspensions Policy and the QuidditchUK Club and Team Membership Policy – Conflicts of Interest will be observed throughout the investigation.

Following completion of the investigation QuidditchUK will release the full results and standings from Northern Cup 2018. We apologise for this delay as a result of the investigation.

In response to these events and to ensure that similar incidents do not arise at  any further QuidditchUK tournaments or events, effective from Southern Cup 2018 QuidditchUK has created and implemented the Team Match Fixing Policy

Joshua Fogg announced as new Operations Director

QuidditchUK are excited to announce Joshua Fogg is stepping up into the role of Operations Director.

Josh has been volunteering as Acting Operations Director for several months now, taking over from our previous Operations Director after their termination.

Josh brings in a wealth of experience after serving as President for Manchester Universities Quidditch Club for the 2017/2018 Season.

Josh has already contributed immensely to QuidditchUK, handling our logistical, financial, and legal needs as we work towards incorporation in the very near future. They’ve been responsible for the vast quality increase in reporting since last season, and will continue to improve processes for both QuidditchUK and the community.

We would like to thank Josh for all of their hard work thus far, and look forward to continuing to work with them as the official Operations Director moving forward.

European Qualifier Tournament Information Announced

We’re pleased to announce that the inaugural European Qualifier Tournament will take place on the weekend of the 26-27th of January 2019 at Drapers Fields in Stratford, East London.

The European Qualifier Tournament is a new tournament this season organised by QuidditchUK to decide which teams will represent the UK at the European Quidditch Cup Divisions One and Two. The tournament will be open to the top 12 teams that qualified across Southern Cup (top 7) and Northern Cup (top 5) respectively. The top six teams from the European Qualifier Tournament will receive an invitation to compete at the European Quidditch Cup Division 1 held in Belgium on 11-12 May 2019. The teams who finish in 7th and 8th will qualify for the European Quidditch Cup Division 2 in Poland on 13-14 April 2019.

European Qualifier Tournament teams will be subject to the European Qualifier Tournament Eligibility Policy.

QuidditchUK’s Vice President Matt Bateman said:

“With QuidditchUK receiving a record 8 spots across two European Quidditch Cup tournaments this year, having a comprehensive qualifier for us has become more important than ever.

We’ve been working with Drapers Fields in conjunction with playfootball.net to locate a venue that had sufficient facilities to host our athletes come January.

Drapers Field Recreation Ground will have two 3G pitches side by side, marked out for a full weekend of competition. It also features full artificial lighting, and indoor facilities such as changing rooms and a cafe. Being in central London it is accessible to those both inside and outside of the capital, as well as providing opportunity for the public to spectate our best teams as we decide who will represent us in Belgium and Poland later this season.”

British Quidditch Cup 2019 Location Announced

QuidditchUK are excited to announce that the British Quidditch Cup will be hosted at Northumbria Sport, Northumbria University in Newcastle on the weekend of the 6-7th of April 2019.

Northumbria Sport includes world class sport facilities, changing rooms, floodlights, and stands for our main pitch. Both QuidditchUK and Northumbria University are incredibly excited to be hosting our flagship tournament here, as the 2019 British Quidditch Cup promises to be our most exciting, and tightly contested tournament yet.

The best teams from Northern and Southern Cup 2018 along with the top two highest placed Development Cup teams will compete for the title of national champion.
